Ayr, Prestwick, Troon, Maybole, Girvan — autumn gardens don’t wait for the collection calendar. Here’s how South Ayrshire Council brown bins compare with Johns Waste Management.
Side by side
How the council’s brown bin service works
- A permit for each brown bin, valid for 12 months.
- Every four weeks from March to November, on your bin calendar.
- Over winter it’s by request — permit holders book their December, January and February collections. Last year the bookings opened on 17 November.

When it’s more than a bin
The last cut, the hedge, a season of leaves — a brown bin every four weeks won’t hold it. Send a photo and John prices the whole garden. See our garden clearances across Ayrshire.
Getting the garden ready for winter
- Last cut, then clear — don’t leave cuttings sitting on the lawn.
- Keep leaves off paths — they get slippery fast.
- Bag branches separately from soft cuttings.
Winter needs planning
From December to February, South Ayrshire brown bins are only emptied by request — permit holders have to book their winter collections. Miss the booking and the garden waste waits until March. With us there’s nothing to book in advance: send a photo when you need it.
