Your Options

Four ways to get rid of rubbish in Ayrshire.

Every route below is legal. They differ in carrying, booking and waiting.

What does a council bulky uplift involve?

All three councils run one, booked ahead and priced by the number of items. Everything has to be outside before the crew comes. South Ayrshire wants items kerbside by 6am, North Ayrshire wants them out before 7am on the booked day, and East Ayrshire, which calls it a special uplift, asks for them within your property boundary, close to where your bins are normally collected. South Ayrshire collects seven items at most per booking, and East Ayrshire warns that high demand can mean a wait of up to three weeks.

For one or two things you can carry out yourself, the council may well be the cheaper way, and SEPA suggests asking your council first. Council prices and refusal lists are on the bulk uplifts page.

Can I take it to the tip myself?

Yes, if you have a car or van to get it there. North Ayrshire and East Ayrshire both accept household waste at their recycling centres free of charge. Every council wants you booked in. East Ayrshire asks for its Residents’ Recycling Permit plus a time slot, which can be booked up to seven days ahead. South Ayrshire issues one e-permit per household, then you book. North Ayrshire asks for a booked slot and proof of residency on display. Vans and trailers need extra steps with some councils, so check their page first.

With the vehicle, the time and a strong back, it is hard to beat on cost.

What about a skip?

Johns doesn’t hire skips. The alternative is a skip bag in two sizes: the 500-litre Midi for £110, or the one-tonne Big One for £170. No permit is needed when it stands on your drive, you fill it at your own pace, and the collection is already paid for.

Or hand the lot to John

John comes in, carries everything out, loads the lot and drives it away, stairs and tight corners included. Mixed loads are fine: junk, furniture, garden waste and bags can all go as one job. The price comes from a photo and covers what it shows. It is usually next day, on a day you pick.

Is it legal to pay someone to take my rubbish away?

Yes, as long as they are registered. SEPA tells householders they have a legal duty to check that a waste contractor is a registered waste carrier. It also warns that bulky waste offers that look too good to be true usually are, and that a quote should include disposal at a licensed site. gov.scot says that, for householders, any household waste the council does not collect must be passed to a transporter registered with SEPA. John is registered with SEPA, and his loads go to licensed disposal.

How It Works

Photo. Day. Gone.

01

Loaded and gone

He does the carrying and the loading. It all goes to licensed disposal, with a waste transfer note if you want one.

Registered · Licensed · Traceable

Your rubbish. Legally gone.

SEPA’s rule for householders is simple: a registered carrier, or nobody. It also says an offer that looks too good to be true usually is. John is registered with SEPA. Every load he takes goes through licensed disposal, and he can give you a waste transfer note.

Straight Answers

Rubbish removal, answered.

How much does rubbish removal cost?
It depends on the amount, the weight and how awkward the access is, so John prices it from a photo. Text the picture to 07385 260093 for a straight price, no obligation. Only a few things carry a set price: wheelie bins at £20 each, white goods at £30 each, and the two skip bags at £110 and £170.
What is a rubbish uplift?
Uplift is the Scottish word for a collection. A council bulky uplift, which East Ayrshire calls a special uplift, is booked with the council, charged by the number of items, and the items wait outside for the crew. A private rubbish uplift with John is lifted from inside, mixed loads welcome, and priced from a photo.
What won’t you take?
Anything hazardous, so no asbestos, no chemicals and no gas bottles. Soil, rubble or hardcore is priced on its own, so send a photo of it first. If something can’t go, John will say so plainly.
How quickly can my rubbish be collected?
Usually next day. John works every day of the week, right across Ayrshire, and there is no area rota: you choose the day that suits you and he confirms it by text. Bins and white goods can be booked online.
Do I have to bring it outside?
No. John comes into the house, the garage or the garden and carries everything out himself, stairs included. That is the main difference from a council uplift, where everything has to be outside before the crew comes.
Is paying someone for waste removal legal?
Yes, if they are a registered waste carrier. SEPA says householders must check this. John is registered with SEPA, his loads go to licensed disposal, and you can have a waste transfer note.
