How South Ayrshire Council’s bins work, and where John fits
How often does South Ayrshire Council empty each bin?
South Ayrshire Council runs the kerbside bins across the town, and each street has its own calendar. Put your postcode into the council’s bin collection search, or use its My Bins app, which can also send reminders. The bins, and how often each one is emptied:
- Green or green-lidded bin: non-recyclable waste, every three weeks. One per household is emptied, and the council asks for no extra bags beside it.
- Blue-lidded bin: metals, plastics and cartons, every four weeks.
- Grey bin: paper, card and cardboard, every four weeks.
- Purple-lidded bin: glass bottles and jars, every six weeks.
- Food caddy: food waste, every week.
- Brown bin: garden waste, every four weeks, with a garden waste permit. The permit is £50 for 12 months, and half price for households on Council Tax Reduction. Brown bins aren’t collected in December, January or February unless you request an uplift, one a month.
Put bins out the night before, or on the morning itself in some town-centre streets. Green, purple, food and brown bins need to be out by 6am, and blue and grey bins by 1pm. Three weeks between green-bin empties is the normal gap. Miss one, and it is six.
What happens if the council misses a bin?
If the bin was out on time and wasn’t emptied, report it to South Ayrshire Council. It investigates, sometimes with footage from the lorry, and comes back if it agrees the crew missed it. If the bin wasn’t out on time, was the wrong colour, or had the wrong things in it, the council charges £25 to come back. A lid that won’t close or a bin that’s too heavy can also be left, and the crew won’t put their hands in a bin to take waste out. Asking the council to empty a bin before its next date costs £25 for each colour of bin, per week. For the full side-by-side, read how the council’s £25 return charge compares.
What about furniture and other bulky items?
Bulky items are a separate council booking. South Ayrshire Council prices it per item: £30 for the first and £5 an item after that, up to seven in all, with sofas and chairs priced one by one and a corner sofa counted twice. Items go out to the kerbside by 6am, and the crew can come any time up to 10pm. Rubble, tyres, mirrors and glass are refused. John’s bulk uplifts are carried out from inside the house and priced from a photo.
Do I need to book a slot at the tip?
Yes. Since 4 July 2022, South Ayrshire’s recycling centres only let in vehicles with a booked slot. The one for the town is Ayr Recycling Centre, Old Farm Road, Heathfield, KA8 9ST. You register for an e-permit with your council tax reference and up to two vehicles, then book a 20-minute slot. No ID is needed at the gate, because the council tax reference proves you live in South Ayrshire. The council says the slots keep queues down, and it asks you not to arrive early. Household waste goes free in the household area, which is for cars and small vans up to transit size. Business waste goes to the lower level, where it is weighed and charged.
How does a collection with John work?
John collects in person, usually next day, seven days a week. Book online and pay by card, or choose to pay John on the day. Leave the bin where he can get to it. It doesn’t need to be at the kerb by 6am, and you don’t need to be in. John covers the rest of the county the same way: see wheelie bin collection across Ayrshire.
What is a £20 bin collection for?
It is for a green bin with three weeks to go until its next lift. Or a recycling bin left behind because there was a bag in it. Or a bin that missed the lorry, where bringing the council back would cost £25. It suits a clear-out, a house move, or a relative’s bins when the family can’t get there. If a relative can’t get the bin out at all, South Ayrshire Council’s assisted collection may suit them better: for households that qualify, the crew wheels the bin out and back. Any bin, any colour, £20, one-off or as often as you need it. No contract.
It is not for soil, rubble or hardcore. They are too heavy for a £20 collection, so they are priced on their own. White goods are £30 each. Skip bags are £110 (Midi, 500 litres) or £170 (Big One, 1 tonne). For anything else, send a photo and get a price. Garden waste, clearances and bigger loads are covered under garden, house and bulk waste collection.
