Autumn in the garden means one thing: leaves — and it lands just as East Ayrshire Council brown bins are winding down for the year. The last cut of the grass, the hedge taken back before winter, a patio full of leaves every morning.

What Johns Waste Management does
- Brown bin full and the lid won’t shut? We empty it for £20. No permit, no season — any month of the year.
- More than a bin? The last cut, hedge trimmings, a season’s leaves, turf, old pots — send a photo and John comes back with a price for a garden clearance.
- Usually the next day, seven days a week, anywhere in Ayrshire.
- We do the lifting and the loading. You just point at what’s going.
How the council’s brown bin service works
- It runs on a yearly permit, bought separately for each brown bin.
- Four-weekly collections, February to November. This year’s first collection was Monday 23 February.
- Permits go on sale in early February, and crews only empty bins that carry a valid one.

The winter gap
The council collections run to November, then stop until the new permit year — right through the months when most gardens produce the most mess. The recycling centre is an option, but you’ll need a Residents’ Recycling Permit and a booked slot to get in.
Or leave it to us. See our garden clearances across Ayrshire.
Keeping on top of autumn garden waste
- Little and often — wet leaves pack down and get heavy.
- Keep the lid closeable — an overfilled bin may be left.
- Bag the heavy stuff separately — branches and turf fill a bin fast.
Why the brown bin fills in autumn
Leaves are light when they fall and heavy when they’re wet. A brown bin that swallowed a summer’s grass cuttings can be full after one wet weekend of raking — and with collections every four weeks, the next empty can be a long way off.
