South Ayrshire Council recycling bins each run on their own cycle — which is why the recycling so often overflows before its day comes round.
Side by side
How the council’s bins work
- Green bin, general waste: every three weeks.
- Grey bin, paper and card: every four weeks.
- Purple-lidded bin, glass: every six weeks.
- Contamination matters — the wrong thing in a recycling bin can see it left.

Six weeks of bottles
After a party, a birthday or Christmas, a six-week bin doesn’t stand a chance. Any wheelie bin emptied for £20 flat, usually the next day. Book on our bin collection in Troon page — or Ayr, Prestwick, Maybole and Girvan.
Making the recycling fit
- Flatten cardboard — it’s the biggest space-taker in the grey bin.
- Rinse and squash bottles and tins.
- Glass fills slowly — until a party. Then six weeks is a long time.
Why recycling overflows first
Cardboard from deliveries and glass from a get-together fill recycling bins far faster than the calendar allows. When the grey bin is full a week early, the boxes end up in the general bin — or stacked beside it.
The green general waste bin runs on a three-week cycle, so every bin in South Ayrshire has a different day. Keeping the bin calendar handy — or the council’s app — is the easiest way to know which bin is due and which one you can get emptied between times.
