Bulk uplifts across Ayrshire.Carried out from inside.
Sofa, mattress, wardrobe, washing machine — John lifts it from inside the house, not the kerb, usually next day. This is a private bulk uplift, not the council’s bulky or special uplift: nothing to drag outside, no waiting for the council’s collection day, and most of what the council turns away goes on the van too. John is a SEPA-registered waste carrier from Stewarton, out across Ayrshire seven days a week. White goods are £30 each, booked online. For everything else, send a photo for a price or text it to 07385 260093, and a straight price comes back.

Council bulky uplift or John —
what each one actually costs you
What do the three councils charge for a bulky uplift?
Each council runs its own service, with its own rules:
- East Ayrshire runs it as part of its special uplift service. It is £40.99 for one to seven items, then £5.82 for each extra, up to 15 items in total. Sofas and chairs are priced on their own (a sofa is £30.90), and residents getting help with Council Tax or Housing Benefit pay half the standard charges. A request can take up to three weeks. Items go within your property boundary, as close as possible to your usual collection point. Anything you take to its recycling centres yourself is accepted free of charge.
- North Ayrshire charges £30.63 for up to five items, plus £6.12 for each extra. Upholstered seating and everything else are two separate bookings with two charges. Items go on the kerb before 7am on the day booked for your area.
- South Ayrshire charges £30 for the first item, then £5 each for up to six more. Sofas and chairs have their own prices (a couch is £15), a corner sofa counts as two items, and everything must be at the kerb by 6am.
For a couple of items you can get outside yourself, a council uplift may suit you fine. When it is upstairs, heavy or on a refusal list, that is the job John does. For the detail, see East Ayrshire’s special uplift compared with a private one, and the same for North Ayrshire’s bulky waste collection.
What will the council not take?
- East Ayrshire won’t collect windows, doors, garden sheds, bricks, slabs or builders’ rubble, trees, fencing, coal bunkers, storage heaters, asbestos or vehicle parts.
- South Ayrshire won’t collect liquids, glass, mirrors, windows, double-glazed doors, concrete coal bunkers, pianos, heating and oil tanks, gas canisters, garage doors, safes, tyres or rubble.
John takes doors, windows, sheds and fencing. Rubble bags go too, priced on their own because of the weight. He won’t take hazardous waste: asbestos, chemicals or gas bottles.
Can you take an old mattress?
Yes. Mattresses and beds are on John’s list, and he carries them down the stairs and out himself. The councils count beds in their own way:
- South Ayrshire counts a base, a mattress and a headboard as three items.
- North Ayrshire puts mattresses on its non-upholstered booking, so a mattress and a sofa mean two bookings and two charges.
- East Ayrshire collects mattresses as part of its bulky uplift.
Send John a photo of the bed and whatever else is going, and you get one price for the lot.
Can you take an old sofa or three-piece suite?
Yes. Sofas and suites are on John’s list, and he lifts them out from inside the house. The councils price them apart from everything else:
- East Ayrshire lists a sofa at £30.90 and a corner suite at £61.80.
- North Ayrshire takes upholstered seating as its own booking, with its own charge, and counts a three-piece suite as three items.
- South Ayrshire lists a couch at £15 and a corner sofa at £30, and counts a corner sofa as two items.
Send John a photo of the suite, tell him about the stairs and the doorways, and the price comes back.
How to prepare
Nothing to carry out. Clear a path, tell John about stairs and tight corners, send a photo of what’s going, and pick a day. Add a wheelie bin collection while he is there, at £20 a bin. If it is the whole house rather than a few big items, that is a house clearance. A few bags and odds and ends rather than furniture? That’s rubbish removal, and it is quoted from a photo too.
Three steps. Done.
