or garage — what to expect
What comes out of a loft, shed or garage?
Old furniture and mattresses. Boxes nobody has opened since the move. Rolled-up carpet and underlay, timber offcuts, rusted tools, bikes, the broken mower. And the shed itself, if it’s coming down: panels, roof felt and all. Garages and steadings full of a lifetime’s “later” are exactly what this is for.
John brings it down the ladder, out the door and onto the van. Anything still useful is rehomed where possible, and the rest is disposed of at licensed sites. There’s a fuller list in what actually comes out of a garage clear-out. Emptying the entire house, not one space? That’s a full house clearance.
What won’t John take?
Hazardous waste: asbestos, gas bottles and chemicals. Look up before you book. Grey, ridged cement roof sheeting can be asbestos cement, and asbestos cannot go on the van. If your garage or shed has a roof like that, photograph it and send it with the rest.
South Ayrshire householders can book asbestos in at Ayr Recycling Centre at no charge, with 24 hours’ notice, double-bagged or wrapped. East Ayrshire’s recycling centres no longer accept asbestos at all. Soil, rubble or hardcore in the mix? Say so with the photo. It’s weighty stuff, so John prices it apart from the rest.
Why doesn’t the council route suit a loft or shed?
Council bulky uplifts are all collected from outside. North Ayrshire asks for them at the kerb, clear of the pavement, before 7am, South Ayrshire needs them out at the kerbside for 6am, and East Ayrshire wants them inside your property boundary, near your usual bin collection point. North Ayrshire’s uplift crews aren’t obliged to enter your home. So whatever is up in the loft, you bring down the ladder yourself. Some of it won’t be taken anyway. South Ayrshire’s no-collect list includes garage doors, windows and rubble, and East Ayrshire’s, shown above, rules out sheds and fencing.
The recycling centre is the other route. East Ayrshire’s centres need both a booking slot and a Residents’ Recycling Permit. A van or trailer may also be inspected on arrival. North Ayrshire books every visit: a car gets a ten-minute slot, a van twenty. A packed loft can be several of those trips. With John it’s one job, carried out from inside. If it’s only a few big items and not a clear-out, John’s bulk uplift service suits better.
How do I get a loft or shed ready for clearing?
Decide what stays and move it to one side. Clear a path to the hatch or the shed door. Check the roof. Then send the photos: the hatch, the shed, the garage, the pile. Pick a day.
- Moving house? Clear the loft before the move, not after.
- Putting it off until spring? Read why the loft is worth clearing before winter.
- Is the shed coming out along with an overgrown garden? A garden clearance can be priced in with it.
- Are the bins overflowing after the clear-out? A wheelie bin collection is £20 a bin and can be added while John’s there.
- Is it only odds and ends, and not a loft or a shed? That’s plain rubbish removal.
